![]() Studio Zevere has perfectly captured the same sense of internal panic and guilt that comes from being unable to be upfront about your personal struggles with those around you that are trying to help. While at times evoking similar dreamlike qualities to the cult-classic OFF, She Dreams Elsewhere stands in a league of its own, crafting an ever present sensation of peaceful restlessness, the same form of calm unease one might find from listening to the sounds of rain to center oneself during a particularly rough bout of anxiety that persists nonetheless, a personally all-too-familiar sensation. But, as the veil between the waking world and the dreamscape is inexorably pierced, how do you navigate a world that makes even less sense than usual? With the help of her friends, Thalia sets out to navigate her new dream-reality, trying to find a way out, and, hopefully, her pet dog. ![]() The apparently waking world becomes less of an escape from the nightmares, eventually turning into merely another avenue for them to intrude upon her every moment. You play Thalia, a black woman getting through her days trying to cope with social anxiety, mental health issues, and bizarre dreams that plague her, dreams that, eventually, bleed into her reality. The sounds of rain pattering against nearby windows, the discordant echo of running water, the sensation of a disquiet sleep, not soothed by the melodious backdrop of the world around you, merely brought into an uncomfortably discordant focus.īoasting a fantastic soundtrack, wonderfully fleshed out characters, and a compelling lead making her way in a world of beautiful environments and hauntingly sombre sounds, She Dreams Elsewhereby Studio Zevere (seriously, go give them a follow) is, without a doubt, one of the best RPGs I’ve played in recent memory, and I’ve only played the first twenty minutes of it. (Content Warning: Discussions of mental health and anxiety) However, the demo, which took me 69 minutes, is available on Steam and Itch. She Dreams Elsewhere – by Studio Zevere (2020) The game is still in development, and at this time does not have a release date. It’s a unique and compelling narrative-driven story that I believe will speak to a lot of people. Overall, despite the weak combat (which again, I do see the possibility for improvement as the game goes on) She Dreams Elsewhere is absolutely worth your time. ![]() The writing in this game is really nicely done and every aspect of the game, from the limited color palette to the ethereal hip hop soundtrack serves to enhance the story. While the combat didn’t wow me, I will absolutely be returning to see how the story plays out. On the other hand, I can see the combat in this game ramping up and being much more difficult and compelling mid-game. I was mostly rushing through the dungeon to see more of the story. This early in the game, the combat has yet to come into its own. The game itself is a turn-based combat affair that’s basically if earthbound and final fantasy had a love child. Luckily for her, there are friends who will help her fight her inner demons and find her way out. In this case, it means getting trapped in a dream that’s trying its best to kill her. Unfortunately with her, things can only get worse before they get better. When the game opens, she’s hit rock bottom. To say the main character Thalia has issues is an understatement, Her anxiety, and depression is so bad she can’t function in day-to-day life. (for the record though, I have yet to play a demo I don’t like)! It reminded me a lot of Shin Megami Tenshi if SMT featured a depressed young adult who drinks heavily and lives in a filthy apartment. This week I checked out She Dreams Elsewhere.
